Call for music 2009
Dear musicians of the world, dear YOU!
I guess there is no need to tell you about the threat of global warming, about the responsibility that our generation has to act in an unprecedented global alliance to safeguard the future of our planet.
But what I think I can tell you about today is the initiative 350.org and to tell you about some ways how you as musician can contribute to our global climate protection campaign, how you can use your artistic capabilities to show leadership regarding global social responsibility related to the climate change challenge.
350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis. Our focus is on the number „350“-as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.
To tackle climate change we need to move quickly, and we need to act in unison--and 2009 will be an absolutely crucial year. This December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to craft a new global treaty on cutting emissions. The problem is, the treaty currently on the table doesn't meet the severity of the climate crisis--it doesn't pass the 350 test.
In order to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350 goal, we're harnessing the power of the internet to coordinate a planetary day of action on October 24, 2009. We hope to have actions at hundreds of iconic places around the world - from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef to your community - and clear message to world leaders: the solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis.
And here is our invitation/our pledge to you as a musician:
You certainly know the power of music. We at 350.org intend to use the power of music to build a global community in support of global climate protection and in support of Copenhagen United Nations climate change talks.
Therefore we ask you to contribute to a global acoustical action on October 24th 2009.
On international day of climate action, on October 24th, at 5 to 12 AM Copenhagen time we are organizing a 350 hz Signal to be broadcasted all over the world (radio stations, TV stations, etc.) thus synchronizing the world on 350!
As the tone f’ is almost exactly 350 Hz individuals and groups of individuals can contribute through singing and with their musical instruments to this acoustical dimension of 350 movement.
In order to sustain the momentum of the "The world synchronized on 350" initiative from October 24th to UN climate talks in Copenhagen this call for acoustical action on October 24th is combined with an Call for contributions to a „350 Global Challenges Song World Cup“ of which the winners shall be invited to perform in Copenhagen during UN Climate Change conference in December 2009. The songs should either thematically address the global efforts for climate change action, climate justice, solidarity, etc. or focus on the tone f’ (some kind of „Improvisations towards 350“, etc.).
This „350 Global Challenges Song World Cup“ is organized in cooperation with „International Association for the Advancement of Innovative Approaches to Global Challenges IAAI Vienna - Ljubljana“ (a NGO established in 2007 to promote and co-ordinate globally the discussion and exchange of ideas and results regarding innovative approaches to global challenges, www.glocha.info/iaai/) within their "Global Challenges World Cup / Climate Protection World Cup" initiative www.glocha.info/iaai/index.php/glocha-initative.
„Music can change the world!“ is a slogan that has inspired generations of musicians. With „Global Challenges Song World Cup“ it is intended to give this hope a new meaning and an institutional backing. Global Challenges Song World Cup shall explore new ways of how intercultural dialogue or dialogue among civilizations respectively can support responses to global challenges and the work of UN system by building a global community in which joint efforts towards global challenges and joint commitment towards global climate change action are emphasized stronger than religious/linguistic/national/generational/ethnic cleavages.
In order not to generate exaggerated expectations it has to be said that „Global Challenges Song World Cup“ is a new evolving/learning initiative based on honorary engagement of IAAI staff and 350.org support and it can easily happen that we will have to face technical, logistical and/or many other problems.
But for us there is no doubt that the initiative „The World Synchronized on 350“ and the „350 Global Challenges Song World Cup“ are an important innovative step towards global community building for climate change action and for future oriented dialogue among civilizations.
Our message to you is: Your voice and your music are needed for global climate action!!
We hope that you trust our vision and therefore accept our invitation to support our initiative by
- Sending us your 350 Hz signal (singing, playing an instrument, perhaps you know a celebrity that could contribute her/his 350 Hz signal, too); these signals will be put on http://www.glocha.info/glocha350/index.php/signals homepage in order to provide the radio stations with a choice of signals in addition to the plain tone generator 350 Hz signal
- Submitting your 350 song (upload it on youtube and send the link This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
